Bird flu outbreak in India as authorities slaughter more chickens

India's worst bird flu outbreak spread to two new districts in eastern India, including an area close to Calcutta, raising fears that the disease could spread to the crowded city. Officials have killed roughly 1.3 million birds, mainly chickens, over the past 10 days and were to continue slaughtering birds that may have been infected over the weekend.

Mirza is the subject of a court summons in Hyderabad after a private citizen made a complaint under the country's Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act.

The controversy surrounds a photograph taken at the Hopman Cup mixed team event in Perth, played at the beginning of the year, that appeared to show Mirza's bare feet resting near the national flag.

The maximum punishment for the offence is a three-year jail term, but Mirza, one of the country's biggest sporting heroes, said she would never do anything to hurt India.
